Benoy is proud to announce its latest appointment with Greenland Group as the Interior Designer for the ‘Shandong Greenland Grand’ retail development in Jinan, China.
The 60,000m2 retail mall is located in the heart of Jinan’s new Central Business District. Benoy has been tasked with delivering a distinctive design, one which will help set ‘Shandong Greenland Grand’ apart from competitor developments in the area.
Known as the ‘City of Springs’ with more than seventy famous water springs found throughout Jinan, Benoy has drawn on this natural identity in its design for the five-storey retail mall. The design team has also emphasised an ‘experience-oriented’ environment as the scheme addresses the impact of e‑commerce on bricks-and-mortar developments.
“Our design has played with the use of light and material selection to bring to life the natural qualities of the city. Materials such as grey stone, timber, champagne brushed stainless steel and light-toned terrazzo flooring will help us to achieve that,” said Simon Wong, Director at Benoy.
At the same time, Benoy’s design ensures there is a balance between creativity and functionality, with the commercial feasibility of the scheme equally high on its agenda. One strategy that the development will introduce is a network of temporary retail kiosks for pop-up and limited-time operators and displays, to bring a flexible, efficient and changing programme of offers to consumers.
The main atrium space has also been utilised not only as a visual centrepiece for the development but also an area for further programming. Benoy has introduced platforms on each level which overhang the void. The spaces give a sense of layering to the interiors and will also form areas for boutique retail and dining tenants such as coffee shops, bookstores and florists, for example.
“What we hope to achieve is an evolving retail journey and experience for visitors with a changing array of temporary retailers and the cascading feeling of the levels to encourage exploration,’ commented Simon.
The development is due to complete in 2020.
