For 18 years, the A&D Awards have set the benchmark for excellence in architecture and interior design within Greater China and beyond. The organization is highly respected for recognising and celebrating the most innovative and efficient projects by local and overseas practices, and is supported by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) HK and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) HK.
The A&D Awards, recently held virtually, revealed the coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards, as well as the shortlisted projects, as determined by an international panel of 19 judges.
Benoy’s multi-awarded project Sanya CDF Mall II located in Hainan, China, was again recognized, this time taking home the Gold Award for the Best Shopping & Retail category for Architecture.
The project has previously been awarded by prestigious bodies such as the MIPIM Asia Awards, DFA Awards, PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards and REARD Awards.
Teri Tsang, Director and Hong Kong Studio Lead, commented:
“We thank the panel of judges and are honoured by this recognition. Sanya CDF Mall II is a unique destination integrating mixed-use, leisure, and retail, whilst harmonizing with the beautiful environment. We are particularly proud of its sea-shell inspired roof canopy design, which has become iconic of the mall. Sanya CDF Mall II has boosted the local landscape with a new world-class experience, delivering environmental, social and economic benefits to the region.”
Sanya CDF Mall Phase II is a pioneering mixed-use commercial development located on Hexin Island in Haitang Bay. Benoy led the masterplanning and architecture design for Phase II of the development, and the vision was to create a world-class destination in Haitang Bay. Phase II took inspiration from Hainan’s natural habitat and the pearl oysters native to the island. The defining roof canopies mimic the gentle and sinuous curves of the Hainan pearl. The smooth, rounded appearance and alluring radiance of the large South Sea pearls are reflected in the soaring canopies, creating a distinctive and captivating appearance.
Benoy carefully considered the location’s environment and humid continental climate with the specially designed roof canopies, enhancing outdoor comfort as they maximize air circulation and create solar shading to temper the humid local conditions. They furthermore provide shelter against strong wind and rain during the typhoon seasons. It is also set up scientifically by simulating the most unfavorable solar altitude angle to account for and shelter against harsh tropical sunlight.
Various measures such as the second-storey corridor and landscape greening have created many comfortable outdoor leisure spaces, allowing tourists to stop, feel the nature, and enjoy the river island.
