DJSER, an architectural collective, recently organised a special event centred on urban regeneration and renewal. Set against the backdrop of Yuyuan Road, an iconic urban renewal endeavour in Shanghai, the event convened on a lush lawn. Benoy Director and Head of Shanghai Studio, Qin Pang, graced the occasion as an esteemed guest and adjudicator for the prestigious “SU Awards” ceremony.
The event served as a platform for the public to interact with DJSER, gaining insights into its mission of crafting improved urban landscapes. Qin Pang, alongside fellow adjudicators, engaged in dialogues with industry experts and encouraged participation from attendees. This inclusive exchange facilitated the sharing of ideas, highlighting the tangible effects urban renewal and rejuvenation can have on enhancing people’s daily lives.
Qin Pang contributed his perspective on urban renewal, stating:
“Cities, like nature, — continuously adapt and evolve, responding to various forces actively and passively. Certain urban spaces may lack the amenities required to meet evolving needs. Solutions can range from comprehensive overhaul or incremental adjustments, each strategies viable.
However, it’s important to use a balance blend of both. Urban spaces should organically grow alongside their inhabitants, avoiding excessive ostentation or mundanity and thrives on pragmatism, objectivity, and tailored interventions.”
With the motto of “Love yourself, love the city and love life”, the event venue featured captivating installations that attracted countless passersby in one of Shanghai’s vibrant neighbourhoods. These installations highlighted the latest trends in urban architecture against natural surroundings. Attendees embraced the opportunity to explore urban renewal and regeneration in a light-hearted atmosphere, blending education with enjoyment.
About the SU Awards
The SU Awards, abbreviated for “Supreme”, embody a mission to enhance urban living standards by honouring exceptional urban regeneration and renewal projects by urban developers and architects/designers.
“SU” represents the initial characters of “Supreme” and corresponds to the Pinyin romanization of the Chinese character ‘甦’ (‘sū’), signifying “revive” and “come alive.” The character ‘上’ (‘shàng’) originally denoted “high” or “above,” yet its connotation extends to signify “high-level” or “top-quality.” Additionally, it functions as a verb, symbolises the ascent from a lower to a higher state.
