Benoy is proud to have participated in the ninth edition of inter airport China, a leading international exhibition showcasing the latest in airport technology, equipment, design and services. Held from 4 – 6 September 2024 at the China International Exhibition Centre (Chaoyang Hall), this three-day event brought together global leaders in airport innovation.
Keynote Speech by Senior Architect Xu Ke
On 4 September, Benoy’s Senior Architect, Xu Ke, was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the prestigious ‘Airport Planning and Design Forum.’ His presentation, titled ‘Rethinking Spatial Design in Airports,’ explored how innovative design strategies can enhance the passenger experience and optimize airport functionality.
As a key focus of the Airport Planning and Design Trends Forum, the session on new and relocated airports will explore the latest trends and technological innovations in airport design.
Topics ranged from unified design approaches and enhancing the passenger experience with a human touch, to green development initiatives, low-carbon design, and the future of intelligent systems. This session showcased the most cutting-edge ideas in the industry, offering participants valuable insights that will drive innovation and development across the entire airport industry.
Benoy’s 80-Year Legacy in Design
Benoy’s nearly 80-year design philosophy centers on creating world-class destinations that respect and respond to the local environment, cultural heritage, and demographic context of each project. This design methodology is applied across a range of scales and project types, including aviation design, where Benoy has been a key player for more than 30 years.
Addressing the Challenges in Aviation’s ‘New Normal’
The aviation industry is navigating a ‘new normal,’ marked by diversification and slower economic growth. Many airport groups face pressure to boost financial returns from non-aviation activities while generating revenue for investors and owners.
Additionally, airports are grappling with increased online engagement, evolving consumer behaviour, and the complex dynamics between online and offline transactions within the terminal space.
Highlighting Benoy’s Major Airport Projects
In his speech, Xu Ke highlighted Benoy’s involvement in major international airport projects — including Changi Airport Terminal 4, Jewel Changi Airport, the Heathrow Airport expansion, and the capacity enhancement of Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1.
He emphasised the growing focus on innovation and experience in airport planning and design, the development of the global aviation industry, and underscored the importance of fostering a sustainable dialogue between design consultants, airports, business partners, and passengers to drive the future of global aviation.
Showcasing Global Innovation in Airport Design
Jointly organised by Reed Exhibitions and China Aviation Supplies Holding Company, with support from the China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology, the Civil Aviation Management Institute of China, and the Shenzhen Safety & Defence Products Association, inter airport China 2024 celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Under the theme, ‘Connecting the World through Innovation and Development’, the exhibition brought together the world’s leading airport planners, designers, equipment manufacturers, and facility service providers to showcase cutting-edge airport technology and solutions.
The event also featured a number of themed zones, including the ‘Belt and Road’ International Cooperation Zone and the Air Freight Zone, designed to meet the diverse needs of global markets and explore new opportunities for the industry’s growth.
As one of the premier events, inter airport China 2024 brought together nearly 100 exhibitors and brands from China and abroad, attracting over 5,000 airport industry professionals from 15 countries. The event highlighted innovations on the latest planning, design, technology, equipment, and solutions, all aimed at driving the global airport industry’s progress towards sustainable, green, and low-carbon development.
