Challenge
The Rajpath is one of the most important vistas in India. Over 100 years later, this hexagonal urban framework remains virtually unchanged. Our philosophy responds to the country’s vision for a new, modern India whilst respecting the urban fabric of New Delhi. Inspired by the Indian architectural history, we have re-imagined the Rajpath by improving on what has come before and reconnecting it with the people.
Solution
We envision extending the masterplan down to the banks of the Yamuna; reconnecting the Rajpath with nature and creating a vista that runs from the river in the east to the ridge in the west. We then evolve the existing typology by creating a new hierarchy of streets and spaces. At the human scale, this creates a new activated and vibrant ground plane.
Result
New Delhi was created as a garden city, and we seek to continue this legacy by ensuring that the natural and built environments blend seamlessly with one another.
