Challenge
Our task was to transform an old post-industrial site in Gera, Pune, into a vibrant and biodiverse landscape. Dominated by a divisive powerline reserve, the site had previously been developed without the application of sustainability principles, with no spaces for recreation or experience and a palpable lack of identity.
Solution
In our design response, we aimed to embrace the area’s industrial heritage and bring disparate elements together. We centred our solution on three core ideas: creating a biodiversity ‘spine’, developing vibrant retail streets and enhancing the surrounding infrastructure.
Result
Following the path of the powerline, our biodiversity spine creates a thriving natural environment rich in flora and fauna. A walkway sits adjacent to a vibrant retail zone, crossing the ‘spine’ at strategic locations to enhance the pedestrian experience. Meanwhile, the use of railway iconography along the walkways reflects the site’s heritage, fusing past and present. What’s more, the newly created green area has been recognised as a key contributor to local stormwater management.
