Challenge
Benoy were tasked to enhance the overall capacity and passenger experience of the existing Terminal 1 in a number of areas critical to HKIA’s ongoing and future expansion strategies to meet future demand:
1. Terminal 1 Annex: Landside expansion including new M&G Hall, check-in and Baggage Claim belts.
2. East Hall Expansion: Airside expansion including a dynamic playzone and a landscaped viewing deck.
3. Departures Kerb: Expanded kerbside drop-off and canopies.
Solution
Benoy provided holistic architecture, interiors, statutory services and site support in close partnership with all relevant airport specialists, stakeholders and user groups. Benoy’s comprehensive services were carefully managed throughout to avoid impact to ongoing operations. Commercial, retail, and F&B offerings were expanded, along with implementing the latest technologies of passenger processing.
Result
An increased handling capacity for HKIA to cater for the expected additional 20 million passengers by 2024. The design cleverly echoes the original terminal design and high standards. The new facilities and unique attractions allow HKIA to remain one of the top attractive hubs in a regional market. Benoy was able to successfully meet the Authority’s brief within the challenging operational and regulatory environment of one of the world’s landmark airports.
