Challenge
Our client required a contemporary landscape concept in keeping with the history of the King’s Road that would create a new, high-quality destination for this iconic London streetscape. Working within a tightly constrained footprint and an outdated retail model, we were tasked with producing a landscape strategy that would help create much-needed public realm and reintroduce greenspace to this popular location.
Solution
Inspired by its botanical past, we worked with our architectural colleagues to reimagine the Kings Road, conceiving a brand new sustainable development with a dynamic mix of uses. Via a vertical courtyard, terraces and roofscapes, we introduced ecologically sound, biodiverse designs and green views to help tenants get closer to nature. And we devised bespoke landscape furniture inspired by key moments in the site’s history, such as bold pop-art graphics and botanical illustrations.
Result
The new project integrates multiple green experiences into a spatially constrained site, bringing nature back into the urban environment. Our designs champion functionality and flexibility, encouraging social activity and promoting ease of access for visitors, tenants and residents. And with a recessed façade providing breathing space for the public realm, the scheme creates an enhanced and shared streetscape for a more sustainable future. The project has also met with critical acclaim, winning the Gold Award in the Future Mixed-Use category at the World Architecture News Awards, and being shortlisted for a New London Architecture Award.
