Challenge

Our brief was to provide concept designs to support the rehabilitation of a large and contaminated area of land in Western India. Looking to transform the space into a thriving ecology park for local people, the client also wanted to create sustainable habitats and ecosystems for flora and fauna. Our challenge was to bring this vision to life in a site lacking in any spatial balance or microclimate treatment, and with no history of biodiversity protection.

Solution

In response, our design centred on the rehabilitation of the site’s natural systems such as creeks, coastal edges, vegetative corridors and greenspace. Our aim was to use these systems to locate programming for connection paths and informal recreation. In particular, we made plans for new mangrove plantings along the coastal edges and creeks within the park, with a view to promoting understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. In this way, our design aimed to raise awareness of the threat of rising sea levels, erratic rainfall and the need for coastal protection.

Result

The Mangrove Eco Park will help to improve wellbeing and promote climate resilience, while also providing studio space in which local artisans can work and sell their products. All architecture will express local history and culture, while the park as a whole will provide a vital new habitat for birds, reptiles, lizards, plants and vegetation. And at its heart, a central landmark mound will provide stunning views and interactive spaces for education on biodiversity, history and culture.
