Challenge
The project required a strategic approach to urban renewal, as large-scale construction was not feasible. There was a need to balance enhancing the city’s overall image with practical implementation while addressing gaps in Kunming’s international economic and functional profile.
Solution
The design introduced the “Diamond of Yunnan” urban spatial structure, refining the existing urban texture and integrating innovative concepts that blended ecology, production, life, and vitality. By positioning Kunming as a strategic gateway, the project promoted internationalization and established the city as a showcase for China’s connection to South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Result
The initiative delivered a sustainable, phased vision for urban renewal, transforming Kunming into a key international gateway city. It elevated the city’s global profile, reinforced its urban functions, and empowered the region with a framework for ecological, economic, and social integration, fostering long-term growth and connectivity.
