Challenge
We were asked to provide concept design to support the development of new residential towers in Nur-Sultan. But with the surrounding riverbank spaces lacking in activation and amenities, we had several major obstacles to overcome – principally, how to inject life into a previously underutilised section of river and respond to dramatic seasonal shifts in climate.
Solution
Our concept is celebration of the wild, varying landscapes of Kazakhstan. It aims to create a range of stepped terraces and open spaces, shaping a new waterfront capable of accommodating diverse commercial, residential and F&B activities.
Result
Our designs use landform and local tree planting to reflect the diversity and natural beauty of Kazakhstan. A dense forest of birch, pine and silver Persian olive trees creates a dramatic arrival experience and boosts biodiversity, also providing a strong buffer between the buildings and adjacent roads. Stepped terraces, meanwhile, enable dynamic river access and articulate the river’s edge. We’ve also opened up space for seating and socialising, where people can enjoy riverside events and views. And on the towers’ upper levels, colourful landscaped spaces provide a playground for residents. Overall, our multiple design features facilitate a rich variety of activities, helping to reactivate these once-neglected riverbanks.
