Challenge
Utilising a prime location in Kiev and a rich architectural history, we were asked to refurbish and extend an iconic department store designed by Soviet Architect Alexey Shchusev. It had to be completely transformed inside, but retain its original façade to protect this key building’s cultural heritage.
Solution
To transform the visitor experience, we demolished the interior to build new personality while preserving the exterior design. A dramatic free-form void through the centre of the building creates new perspectives and spectacular views.
Result
Now boasting three basement levels, six main trading levels, a new rooftop restaurant and exterior terrace, TSUM is commercially relevant and fully integrated into 21st century Kiev. It responds to and rivals the design philosophy of the world’s grandest department stores, renewing the eclectic culture of central Kiev.
