Challenge
Union Station is in downtown Toronto and is one of the busiest transit hubs in Canada, with over 200,000 people using it each day. It is one of Canada’s most important heritage buildings and a fine example of Beaux-Arts and Neo-Classical architecture from the 20th century. The challenge was to leverage Union’s identity as a major transit hub and reinvent it into a vibrant destination for Toronto’s most ambitious culinary, cultural, design, and retail offerings.
Solution
The solution to transform this busy transportation hub into a destination involved reprogramming the spaces into multiple districts, offering convenience, diversity, and opportunities for guests, passengers, and visitors to enjoy. Strong brand expression and design elements were strategically planned to enhance the architectural features of the building.
Result
The revitalization of Union Station exemplifies a remarkable evolution from a bustling transit hub to a dynamic destination in the heart of Toronto. It has become a multifaceted destination celebrating the fusion of heritage and modernity, serving as a thriving hub for the city’s most ambitious culinary, cultural, design, and retail products and servings.
