Challenge
Yorkshire Sculpture Park needed a wayfinding masterplan and concept design for their 500-acre site at Bretton Hall, an C18th estate in West Yorkshire.
Solution
Our solution had to address a number of challenges, including accessibility issues, a multiplicity of exhibits, and the general vastness of the landscape. We also had to bring consistency to the scheme’s tone of voice and nomenclature, while enabling people to explore, discover and feel ‘wild but safe’. Our design offers a balanced and subtle wayfinding solution that reflects the surrounding natural beauty. It considers seasonal change, site approaches, end-user needs and navigational routes to enhance the overall visitor experience. It also introduces a new nomenclature and information hierarchy, using ‘Yorkshire’, ‘Sculpture’ and ‘Park’ as headings to provide structure, clarity and consistency of message.
Result
Wayfinding design that balances wilderness and art within a vast rugged landscape in West Yorkshire.
